Covid Recovery Certificate to travel to USA

How to get a Covid Recovery Certificate for the USA

International travel restrictions are finally lifting, so you may be planning a transatlantic trip to the US in the coming months. At one time we seemed to be on the path to international air travel becoming increasingly easy and accessible, but let’s face it, the global pandemic has made it unpleasant to the extreme. A key to easing this pain is a knowledge of the unknown and knowing what’s required in advance. That way you can hopefully avoid being given the third degree when you arrive in JFK, by the overbearing immigration officer from the Department of Homeland Security.

The United States’ Document of Recovery from Covid-19

In January 2022, The Montague Clinic launched its Covid Recovery Certificate service, known officially in the USA as a Document of Recovery from Covid-19. The purpose of the document is simple. Following an infection with Covid-19, both PCR and lateral flow tests can give positive results for several months, even after you are no longer infectious. Additionally the variable degree of natural immunity that ensues following infection, is likely to offer more protection to you and thus to your fellow travellers.

The Centre for Disease Control (CDC) now accepts a Covid Recovery Certificate for anyone who had recently tested positive for Covid-19, instead of the standard pre-departure Covid test (by the way if you need one of these then please see our range of PCR and lateral flow tests for Covid-19).

The CDC has set out specific rules for certificates of recovery. For instance, your Covid test must be a PCR or rapid antigen test, which meets the CDCs quality standards, and the test needs to have been taken within a particular time frame. Currently, the CDC requires the test to be taken longer than 5 days but not longer than 90 days before your certificate is issued.

How to Apply for Proof of Recovery

At The Montague Clinic, if you have a formal report of a qualifying Covid test then you may apply for a Covid Recovery Certificate. During the application process we ask a few questions about your recent infection, your symptoms, and how severe they were. We require a copy of your ID and Covid test report. We also ask whether you have completed self isolation as per the UK Government’s latest guidelines. Upon application, our doctors will review your details, and authorise your document. The CDC requires the document to be signed by a fully licensed medical practitioner, but don’t worry, we all are!

Turnaround Time

Our official turnaround time is 24 hours, but we normally turn it around much faster … about 2 hours in most cases. Documents are email in PDF format, and we recommend you carry it together with a copy of the Covid test report you uploaded when applying.

One Final Tip!

The CDC periodically changes its regulations as research surrounding the virus and the pandemic grows. For instance, a month ago the CDC only accepted a positive PCR test as evidence of infection, but now a lateral flow test will do. At The Montague Clinic we try to keep on top of these changes, however if you spot any new information before we do then please let us know – our super responsive medical team can make any appropriate changes quickly.

The CDC’s self isolation rules are now the same as the UK. All individuals who test positive for Covid-19 now are recommended to isolate for 5 complete days.

Therefore, in accordance with the CDC’s latest regulations, a Covid Recovery Certificate can therefore be issued on Day 6 following your positive test (the date of your positive test is considered ‘Day 0’).

IMPORTANT: The CDC recommends not travelling to the USA for 10 days following a positive Covid-19 test, or the start of symptoms. Some airlines may therefore request that you wait 10 days before travelling.
